The SoilKit story begins more than a century ago when the Woerner Family began farming U.S. soils. The Woerners knew from the start that understanding the composition of their soil was the surest path to success. The family had been testing their soils for decades as they recognized this as the only way to know what amendments soil needs for optimal crop growth. As the Woerner operation grew to become one of the largest producers of sod in the nation, the rest of the lawn and garden industry began adopting the science-driven approach of soil testing. In fact, the U.S. Department of Agriculture now recommends that homeowners test their lawns and gardens at least once a year. This is to improve outcomes and protect the environment from the overapplication of certain fertilizers. It’s a simple idea but a powerful one. Dig underneath to learn your soil story.
Our founder and CEO, Christina McInnis grew up on the Woerner family farm. From an early age, Christina would accompany her grandmother to the family garden center where she witnessed the unhappiness of lawn and garden owners firsthand. Most had never heard of the vital importance of soil testing, a practice her family had been using for decades.
As Christina walked customers through the complexities of extension-office soil testing, she began to understand the problem. Authentic soil testing was laborious, complicated and time-consuming. Although it was one of the keys to her family’s agricultural operation, it was just too much for the average homeowner to take on. Something had to be done and so, SoilKit was born.
